It is important to check liver cancer before it develops or worsens, and the best solution is a health checkup. However, the high-risk group has to undergo health checkups at least twice a year, so the financial burden is not easy. To solve this problem, the National Health Insurance Corporation supports a health checkup once every six months for high-risk groups of liver cancer, and is also reducing the burden of treatment costs through a disaster medical expense support project.

The National Health Insurance support for liver cancer health screening is being implemented as part of the National Cancer Screening Project * . Eligible recipients are health insurance subscribers and medical benefit recipients, who must meet the following four criteria among men and women over the age of 40. First, hepatitis B antigen positive, second hepatitis C antibody positive, third patient with chronic liver disease caused by hepatitis B or C virus, and fourth patient diagnosed with cirrhosis.

Screening methods include liver ultrasound (imaging test) and serum alpha-fetoprotein test (blood test). The check-up cycle is once every 6 months and the co-pay is 10% (the lowest 50% among health insurance subscribers, no co-payment for medical benefit recipients). For liver cancer, periodic check-ups are of utmost importance for prevention and treatment, so it is helpful to actively utilize it if you are in a high-risk group. As for the application method, the National Health Insurance Corporation selects the subject for examination according to the current year standard and sends a health check-up sheet guiding the examination method and procedure to the subject. Those who have received this check-up must bring their health check-up sheet and identification card, apply to a designated cancer screening institution, and receive a check-up.

In addition, if you are burdened with excessive medical expenses due to liver cancer treatment, pay attention to the disaster medical expenses support project of the Corporation. It targets the bottom 50% of income earners (excluding holders of large assets) and provides medical expenses up to KRW 30 million per year for 180 days after a cancer diagnosis and hospitalization or outpatient treatment (limited to those registered with special calculation exceptions).
